The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products is a non-profit organisation formed in 2011 ‘to lead the transformation to a healthy low carbon built environment by championing the understanding and use of demonstrably sustainable building products’. They have grown to around 150 members of forward-thinking companies and institutions from across the built environment sector.

The winners of the ASBP Awards 2023 were announced, following a ‘hybrid’ awards ceremony on Thursday February 23, 2023 at the EDGE Showroom in London and online.

It was a real pleasure to attend this award ceremony and join ASBP, who have been at the forefront of sustainability for over a decade. A packed room, with a keen crowd was supported by a number of attendees online in this hybrid event, which included both online and in person voting.

Kicking off we heard interesting insights into the work of the event partners, covering not just respected sustainable product manufacturers such as Back to Earth and Bereco, but key players in the environmental field such as Natureplus and Futurebuild and the charitable Article 25 with their building projects for social change.

Hosted by ASBP we went through the finalists one by one in the room and online, followed by remote and in person questions.

The evening highlighted an number of positive firsts not only for the environmental movement but for the UK in general. The first UK Passivhaus certified secondary school was presented by Architype, a practice who have done a huge amount to bring this standard in to the UK main stream. The first UK grown and produced thermally treated wood, by Brimstone, creating another sustainable option for UK timber products and helping bring back sustainable forest management, with an increased durability and EPD to boot ! On a similar thread in product declarations, a first by name and possibly by nature, Firstplanit presented their seemingly all encompassing digital tool with an extensive product characteristic and category database.

Worthy finalists also included what might be one of the first modular lime and hemp housing schemes, also achieving the Passivhaus standard, and a real and workable fixing solution to reduce waste in office flooring and promoting circularity. Alongside these many other finalists presented outstanding projects that can hopefully inspire change.

The event ended with drinks, nibbles and great conversation within the showroom full of some of key products and on this occasion personalities, who are increasingly successful at bringing about and facilitating real, logical, sensible and sound change. At a time when green is increasingly mainstream, greater scrutiny is key, as is having longer standing pioneers and mantle bearers.

The event was held at the sustainable construction and design showroom of the Edge London, which itself is also dubbed as being London’s first. We hope to follow up with some of the shortlisted attendees to find out more about their roles, helping in designing more sustainable buildings.

The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP) celebrated a milestone birthday in 2023 with the 5th annual ASBP Awards which have gone from strength to strength over the past 5 years, developing a reputation for championing truly sustainable building projects, products and initiatives.

Submissions were judged by members of the ASBP board and executive team, who have expertise from across the construction industry, and assessed against the ASBP’s “Six Pillars of Sustainable Construction”.

ASBP would like to thank the nine finalists, shortlisted entrants and all those that took the time to enter this year. Yet again the judges were delighted with the quality of the entries, and those that were unsuccessful this year are encouraged to submit again in 2023-24.

The in-person ceremony was once again kindly hosted by EDGE in London, a sustainability-focused design and construction showroom. Both virtual and in-person attendees had the opportunity to vote on their favourite finalists, with the most popular entrants being awarded the ‘People’s Prize’.
